Attention residue: the hidden cost of switching tasks

Every time you switch tasks, part of your attention stays behind. Researchers call this leftover focus attention residue.

A quick look at a feed can cost you more than the minutes you spent there. The fix is not willpower but design: decide what a session is for and remove the easy exits.

A day in Chrome.

The easiest way to see what the extension does is to follow one day. The times are examples; the behavior is real. Each step links to the details.

  1. You started a cycle

4 × 25 minutes with 5-minute breaks in between. The Odaklio icon in your toolbar shows the minutes left: 25.

    Focus sessions
  2. Your fingers typed instagram.com out of habit

Instead of the page, the lock screen opened: “Time to focus.” You pressed Stay focused and the tab went back to your previous page.

  3. Break

The icon turned green and counted down 5 minutes. When the break ended, the second block started on its own.

  4. A lecture on YouTube

Study mode is on: no home page recommendations, no Shorts, no side list. At 14:32 you pressed “Take note”; the note was saved with a link back to that exact second.

  5. A hard paragraph in an article

You selected the sentence, highlighted it in yellow and asked Odi to explain it. One tap added the answer to your notes.

  6. Focusing on your phone at the library

You started the session on your phone. Within a minute Chrome switched to protection too; a small dot on the icon says you are focusing on your phone.

  7. Two minutes to the daily limit

You gave the video group 30 minutes a day. Two minutes before the end a warning appeared on the page; when time ran out, the site locked.

Start in one click. Keep time in sight.

The Focus tab mirrors your phone: pick a mode, see the length, start. The session is written to your account while it runs, so it shows up in your phone’s history, rings and streak.

  • A topic or a task

Write what you’re focusing on or pick one of today’s tasks. When the session ends, mark the task done with one tap.

  • You stay in control

Pause, resume, add 5 minutes or finish. If you don’t want to keep it, cancel; the time isn’t added to today’s focus.

  • The icon is the timer

Orange: minutes left. Green: minutes elapsed in a free session or left in a break. “II”: paused. Blue dot: you’re focusing on your phone.

  • A small timer on every page

While a session runs, the time left sits in the page corner; hover for pause and finish. It hides itself in full-screen video.

  • It tells you when it’s over

A notification when a session or break ends, and a short sound if you like. Each can be turned off separately.

  • Focus earns tokens

Completed sessions earn tokens that go to the wallet on your phone. Sessions shorter than 30 seconds don’t count.

  • One session at a time

If a session is already running on another device, Chrome asks: finish it and start here, or follow it from here?

  • Start without clicking

Alt+Shift+F starts or pauses a focus session from any tab.

Groups shared with your phone

Distracting sites close when you focus.

Blocking groups are the same groups as Focus Guard on your phone. Apps on the phone, sites in Chrome; the group’s name, rule and strictness are shared. Change a group in one place and it changes in the other.

  • In focus

Locked only during focus sessions, even ones you start on your phone.

  • Always

Locked whether or not a session is running.

  • On a schedule

Locked on the days and hours you choose, including windows past midnight like 22:00–07:00. Add a daily limit on top if you like.

  • Daily limit

15, 30, 45, 60, 90 or 120 minutes a day. It warns you two minutes before the end and locks when time is up.

If a site is in several groups, the strongest rule wins: always, then schedule, then daily limit, then focus.

Blocking groups as they appear in the dashboard. “On phone too” marks groups that also lock apps on your phone.

Wallet shared with your phone

You set the lock. Opening it should be a choice.

When you hit a locked site, Odi greets you instead of the page. You see why it’s locked and when your session ends. Three paths: go back, take a short break with tokens, or use the emergency exit.

  1. Stay focused

The tab returns to your previous page. If there’s nothing to go back to, the tab closes or becomes a new tab.

  2. Short break

5 minutes of access, then it locks again. The button opens after a short wait, putting a little distance between an impulse and a real need.

  3. Emergency exit

Always free. No questions, no tokens. Every lock lifts for 15 minutes and then comes back on its own.

Breaks get pricier during the day

Today’s first break costs 15 tokens. The next ones cost 30, 60 and 120. Each price shows how much focus it equals.

  • Your balance can go below zero, but never under −200.
  • Tokens don’t work on strict groups; only the emergency exit does.
  • Each time the lock screen opens, a line goes into the log, the same log as your phone’s shield records.

Why switching tasks costs more than it seems

Every time you switch tasks, part of your attention stays behind. Researchers call this leftover focus attention residue. It is why a quick look at a feed can cost you more than the minutes you spent there.

The fix is not willpower but design. Decide what a session is for, remove the easy exits, and give yourself a clear end time. A defined block makes it easier to start and easier to stop.

Breaks matter too. Short pauses between blocks help you return with a clearer head, as long as the break does not pull you into something that never ends.

Select any sentence above, or use the menu on the sample selection. Click a highlight to change its color or delete it.

Demo. Odi’s answers here were written in advance; in the extension they arrive live and are saved to your chat.

Runs on your device

Translation happens on your computer. The text stays put.

When you tap Translate, Chrome’s built-in translator is tried first: free, offline, and the text never leaves your computer. If the language pair isn’t supported or Chrome is older, Odi translates instead. The card says which one did.

  • It detects the language

The source language is detected automatically. If the text is already in your target language, the direction flips: Turkish text is translated into English.

  • Keep the translation

Copy it, or save it to your notes together with the quote.

  • Version needed

On-device translation works on Chrome 138 and later, for supported language pairs.

Come back to the page. Your highlight is still there.

A highlight is stored by its text, not its position: the sentence you marked, plus the 32 characters before and after it. Even if an ad is added, the comment count grows or a paragraph is edited, your highlight finds the right place.

  • Click a highlight

Change its color, add a note (“Why does this part matter?”), ask Odi, save it to notes, copy or delete it.

  • Works on changing pages

In single-page apps, a page’s highlights load when the address changes. On slow-loading content it keeps looking for up to a minute.

  • Leaves no trace

The page’s code isn’t changed; only text pieces get a thin wrapper. Delete the highlight and nothing is left behind.

  • Highlight library

One limit: a session started in Chrome doesn’t trigger your phone’s app lock. The shield on your phone only kicks in for sessions started on the phone. The session still lands in your phone’s history, rings and streak.

On first launch, it sets you up step by step.

When you install the extension, a short welcome opens. Every step can be skipped and every setting changed later.

  1. Hello

  2. Account

Sign in with your phone account or continue without one for now.

  3. Blocking

What it can see, and why.

The extension works on the pages you visit, so it asks for broad permissions. Here is what each one is for.

What doesn’t change

  • Incognito windows are never counted.
  • You decide which sites are never recorded and which have their names hidden.
  • On-device translation never sends the text off your computer.
  • Extension settings are saved to your Chrome account, not our database.
  • You can delete this browser’s time history with one button.
  • You set the locks, and the emergency exit is always free.

A few things worth knowing.

Something else on your mind?

Write to us
Can I use it without Odaklio on my phone?

Yes. Focus sessions, site locks, highlights and time tracking work in this browser without signing in. Sign in to your account to turn on notes, Odi and sync with your phone.

Does a session I start on my phone lock Chrome too?

Yes. If “Protect with your phone” is on (it is by default), Chrome switches to protection within a minute. The reverse is partly true: a session started in Chrome lands in your phone’s history and streak but doesn’t trigger the phone’s app lock.

Why do short breaks cost tokens?

Tokens are a balance you earn by focusing. Tying a short break to tokens turns the “just one minute” impulse into a small cost. The price rises during the day, and strict groups can’t be opened with tokens. The emergency exit is always free.
